Maketu Health and Social Services
Maketu Health and Social Services currently provide a mix of mental and physical health services along with a number of social services. Maketu has been delivering quality health and social services to Māori whānau and high-needs families, achieving positive whānau outcomes through a sustainable Whānau Ora system.
Its Waka Hourua project involved a suite of tikanga-based programmes designed to:
- strengthen hapū, iwi and communities to work together to support whānau members,
- celebrate the preservation of life,
- reinforce with whānau that life is valuable, and
- reduce the impact of isolation felt by whānau and the wider community who have been impacted by suicide or self-harm.
Their Tikanga Programmes designed to strengthen cultural identity and emphasise the relationship of individuals with their socio-cultural environment. The aim is about reintegrating traditional Māori cultural values, philosophies, knowledge and practices into the everyday lives of Māori whānau members and building pathways to suicide prevention through connectivity and resilience.
