Best Care (Whakapai Hauora) Charitable Trust
Whakapai Hauora is focussed on working with the communities of Dannevirke, Foxton and Shannon. Its Waka Hourua Project is Waiho I te Toipoto and it is about Bringing the community closer together.
The first part of the project was the delivery of the Talk Tū Campaign through a communication campaign for the coverage area of Kia Ora FM 89.8 with a simple message, “there’s always someone to talk to” – whether you are contemplating suicide or you have lost loved ones to suicide. This simplicity has proven appeal for Rangatahi especially.
The second part of the project was supporting Whakapai Hauora Kia Piki Te Kaha Kaiurangi Navigators to work directly with the above communities and establish Rōpu Kōrero Haumaru Kaiāwhina (Safe Talk Groups) as catalysts for starting the discussions around suicide in the communities.
The Kia Piki Te Kaha Kaiurangi Navigators supported these groups with community specific resources, training to increase knowledge about suicide, lists of existing agencies for services, organising guest speakers, supporting the reduction of availability and accessibility of suicide methods, as well as local media liaison and community awareness. They also supported the establishment of Rangatahi Space in Foxton and have hui with Marae Paepae around the rohe to talk about suicide and support Marae when these happen.
