He Konae Tupu Charitable Trust
Focused on suicide prevention the Waka Hourua project was for rangatahi and their whānau and hapū, designed to prevent suicide within the community by bringing together role models, resources and bereaved support and making connections that are appropriate and supportive for their community.
The project was developed in the context of enormous tragedy and loss in one whānau and lived experience is the knowledge base for building the project. The project acknowledges that whānau trust, within itself, is fundamental to working and living positively.
This project involved developing a whānau and hapū plan to identify the support and assistance required in the post-vention phase and strengthening their whānau, hapū and iwi connections.
The project seeks:
- stronger whānau/hapū community connection
- plans and approaches designed by whānau, alongside relevant services within the wider community
- positive role modelling and resources available to high risk whānau, and
- support and assistance to bereaved families.
