Auē taukiri e! - Rangatahi in Taita!
120 rangatahi and 40 kaimahi from the Wellington rohe gathered at Walter Nash Stadium inTaita on the 8 December to attend another 1 day regional Au.E! - a rangatahi led and centred gathering that provided a free interactive hui for rangatahi raising awareness of suicide prevention, building resilience, cyber safety, Māoriora and hauora.
The Rangatahi Rōpū Group of Te Rau Matatini was imperative to have that youth voice on the planning, implementation and execution of the event delivering a ‘by rangatahi, for rangatahi’ facilitated approach to the design, development and implementation of this hui as we have done in previous mahi this would ensure that rangatahi were actively leading and involved in all stages of the project life-cycle and influence on who to invite.
The hui target group were Māori rangatahi at secondary schools, Youth Guarantees wānanga and kura, tauira aged 14 – 18. This time we did see some rangatahi of 11 - 13 joining us too. Ka pai. It was held within school hours
The emphasis was strengths-based and created interactive experience that the attendees would not have engaged with or experienced at a youth hui before, with access to resources, activities, people and media that were relevant to the rangatahi.
We were very fortunate to have such a diverse group of people who contributed to the success of the hui. The support group were of likeminded people who all just worked together understanding the demands of this kind of event. An impressive group of mostly “strangers” who know their mahi and were focused on the outcomes of the youth gathering. Mauri Ora!
