Ngā Kakano Foundation
Ngā Kakano is a Māori health and social service provider based in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, delivering local GP and RN services, mental health and addiction services, Auahi kore services and Whānau ora services. With a mission to help young people thrive through the acquisition of knowledge Ngā Kakano Foundation’s project -Whakapiki Maunga, Whakatupu Tāngata - seeks to:
- Reconnect Tapuika Rangatahi – with two 10 week programmes for a minimum of 30 participants with the resources to record traditional knowledge, and including karakia, whakapapa, pepeha and learning waiata and haka specific to Tapuika.
- Increase Tapuika Rangatahi Resilience – with cultural exchanges, learning of te reo rangatira, access to mentoring and the establishment of ‘safe zones’ and the chance to speak with ‘safe adults’.
- Reduce the incidence of suicide amongst Tapuika Rangatahi – understanding risk factors and appropriate responses.
- Ensure the sustainability of the Rangatahi Programme – employing diversity of resources and cost-effective management.
