Southseas Healthcare provides community health services, social services and clinical services. This Waka Hourua project has put together against a backdrop of escalating self harm among Pasifika peoples in communities where deprivation contributes to mental health issues and suicide risk.
A League of Heroes was a community-based initiative working with rugby league players of Pasifika ethnicity who have faced tough times or dealt with loss of loved ones to suicide. The ‘heroes’ assisted Pacific males who had the courage to work with them in a setting beyond the everyday grind. The project goals were to bring community opportunities, resources, clubs, schools and businesses together and affirm the benefits of confiding supportive relationships.
Being community developed and driven, A League of Heroes fostered local leadership. Suicide prevention and post-vention resources and training were provided to players, their families and supporters in clubs with high Pasifika representation.
There were four key objectives:
- Ensuring community collaboration by working with existing groups to pull together resources to benefit A League of Heroes at minimal cost, maximum benefit.
- Ensuring a gender and culturally appropriate vehicle were available for Pasifika men seeking support and information
- Building community leadership for suicide prevention by supporting the community ownership to drive A League of Heroes.
Enhancing the provision of suicide prevention knowledge within and across the South Auckland community.
