Spirit of Rangatahi Charitable Trust
The Spirit of Rangatahi Charitable Trust (the Trust) has run fourteen two week programmes for youth, 11-17 years of age, over the past five years, the last four years in Porirua. Over 350 youth, predominantly Pacific (Samoan, Tokalau, Cook Is) and some Māori, have participated in these programmes with over 110,000 hours of contact time clocked up by the Trust’s staff and volunteers.
Inspired by the work by Ngāti Hine Health Trust in Whangarei with the RAID Movement, the Trust organised a workshop in Porirua for youth workers and community leaders on Youth Suicide Prevention in April 2014. Over 75 people attended demonstrating a huge need in Porirua to learn more about youth suicide prevention.
This Waka Hourua project built on the youth development work with a programme that builds youth resilience through regular engagement, regular youth and family gatherings, holiday programmes, special trips and events greatly assisting young Pacific youth to remain present, engaged and contributing in their family, church and community. It delivered a full Youth Development Programme in one location, Porirua East, reaching 300 young people, their parents and communities, working alongside Canons Creek School and local churches.
